<image:title>Weekly Snapshot for 9/25/20 - Kim Jong-un Apologizes for Killing of South Korean Official</image:title>
<image:caption>Kim Jong-un issued a rare apology on September 25th for the killing of a South Korean official in North Korean waters. According to reports, a 47-year-old South Korean man who was found floating in North Korean waters earlier this week was shot and set on fire by members of the North Korean military. Kim acknowledged the killing in a letter to South Korean President Moon Jae-in, characterizing it as a shameful act that should never have occurred. The killing was the first of a South Korean citizen at the hands of North Korean forces in a decade.</image:caption>

<image:title>Weekly Snapshot for 9/25/20 - two stabbed in paris near former offices of charlie hebdo</image:title>
<image:caption>Two individuals have been arrested for the stabbing of two others near the former offices of controversial satire magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris. The Charlie Hebdo offices were attacked in 2015 by two brothers claiming to be members of Al-Qa’ida in the Arabian Penninsula. The attack resulted in the deaths of 12 people. The motive and extent of the attack was still not entirely clear as of 10:30 EST, but the manner of the attack- specifically, the use of a meat cleaver- appears consistent with other extremist-inspired attacks that have occurred in Europe.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The United States Government has pledged $720 million in humanitarian assistance to Syria, as well as an additional $152 million for the African Sahel region and $108 million for South Sudan. The African Sahel is seen by many as an increasingly dangerous new front for terrorist activity, driven in part by food insecurity and population displacement. In South Sudan, the COVID-19 crisis has compounded an already deadly humanitarian crisis.</image:caption>

<image:caption>New sanctions against iran The United States imposed broad new sanctions and export controls against Iran over the weekend of September 25th. Relations between Iran and the U.S. have fallen apart since the U.S. withdrew from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which is the formal name for the nuclear deal struck between the U.S. and Iran in 2015. Iran has since breached its part of the agreement by exceeding the nuclear material stockpile limits and purity levels established under the JCPOA. The new U.S. sanctions cover 27 entities and individuals involved in Iran’s Defense Ministry and nuclear program. Please check the analysis section in a few weeks for views on what the U.S.- Iran relationship could look like under a second Trump presidential term, or under a Biden presidency.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Armenia- Azerbaijan Conflict Escalates The conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan has continued to escalate, with Azerbaijan’s President vowing to fight until Armenian troops leave the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh territory between the two countries. Both countries are former Soviet republics and fought a war between 1988-1994 over this same territory. The territory is recognized as part of Azerbaijan, but its population is mainly Armenian. There is a real possibility that other regional and global powers may become involved, with Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stating his nation’s support for Azerbaijan. Armenia is a formal ally of Russia, and both are members of the Collective Security Treaty Organization. Moscow also maintains relations with Azerbaijan, and has called for a ceasefire.</image:caption>
